Rainbow coloured opal

Opal. Today this is valued as a semi-precious stone but this rainbow coloured opal was used in ancient Rome as a symbol of power. An Opal is not a single crystal but is made up of tiny spheres of silica. It also contains water and can dry out and crack, especially if exposed to heat.
