Some European countries began legalizing the dissection of executed criminals for educational purposes in the late 13th and early 14th centuries. The Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Nicolaes Tulp is a 1632 oil painting on canvas by Rembrandt. Tulp is pictured explaining the musculature of the arm to medical professionals.
