The city of Khorramshahr in Iran, located about 40 kilometers southeast of Basra in Iraq, has been at the center of events since the beginning of the war. The Battle of Khorramshahr, which lasted seven weeks from September 22 to November 10, 1980, left a ghost town that was renamed "Khuninshahr" meaning "City of Blood."
