They form the southern end of the Niagara Gorge. From largest to smallest, the three waterfalls are the Horseshoe Falls, the American Falls and the Bridal Veil Falls. Niagara is derived from the name given to a branch of the local native Neutral Confederacy (Iroquoian-speaking North American indigenous people), who are described as being called the Niagagarega people on several 17th century French maps of the area. Voyage dans l'interieur de l'Amerique du Nord, execute pendant les annees 1832-34. Karl Bodmer (February 11, 1809, October 30, 1893) was a Swiss printmaker, lithographer, painter, illustrator and hunter.
