Wolfgang von Gronau arrives in New York after crossing the Atlantic, August 1930, (1932). German aviation pioneer Wolfgang von Gronau (1893-1977) flew a Dornier Wal from Sylt in Germany via the Faroe Islands, Iceland, Greenland and Labrador, reaching New York City after covering 7,520 km (4,670 miles) in 47 flight hours. From "Die Eroberung Der Luft", (The Conquest of the Air), cigarette card album produced by the Garbáty cigarette factory, 1932. Eugene and Moritz Garbáty, who were Jewish, were driven out of business by the Nazis in the late 1930s, and forced to sell their factory which lay empty for over 70 years.
