HUS, Jan (1369-1415). Czech priest, philosopher, reformer, and master at Charles University in Prague. Excommunicated in 1410 to propagate the doctrines of Wycliffe. Under the protection of King Wenceslas and safe conduct of the Emperor Sigismund, in 1414 attended the Council of Constance, where he was tried and burned for heresy. This triggered the Hussite uprising (1419-1434), history of religious wars. Engraving.
