Leslie Howard, English actor, 1933. Howard (1893-1943) made his name playing stiff upper lipped English characters before landing the role of Ashley Wilkes in 'Gone with the Wind' (1939). He returned to Britain from Hollywood to assist with the war effort but was killed when the plane carrying him on a trip to Lisbon was shot down by the Luftwaffe over the Bay of Biscay.
