Iodine crystals. Iodine (chemical symbol I2) is a nonmetallic element of the halogen group, which also includes chlorine and fluorine. It is a solid at room temperature, but readily forms a violet vapor. Passing from a solid to a gas without a liquid phase is known as sublimation.
