Telescope at Lick Observatory, located on Mt. Hamilton, in the Diablo Range, east of San Jose, California. The observatory is owned and operated by the University of California. Constructed in the late 19th century, Lick was the world's first permanently occupied mountain-top observatory. Its benefactor, James Lick, is entombed below the floor of one of the telescopes: the 36 inch (91.44-cm) James Lick telescope, the largest refracting telescope in the world when it was built, and still the third-largest today.
