Title: Phyllite, Massachusetts
Caption: Phyllite is a dense, fine grained, lustrous metamorphic rock that displays intense foliation. It is similar to schist, but in phyllite the individual mineral grains are much smaller. Phyllite is commonly the result of extremely intense metamorphism of slate, and the constituent clay minerals have recrystallized into flakes (typically chlorite) large enough to impart a lustrous sheen to the rock.
