Space Shuttle Columbia Thermal Tiles

A close view of damaged tiles on the strake or leading edge of the orbiter Columbia's wing. Less than a dozen tiles were damaged in this way. The tiles did not fall off. A portion of their surface is missing. The STS-2 orbiter returned from this second flight in better condition than from its first mission. Dryden Flight Research Center, Edwards Airforce Base, California, November, 1981.
