Walter C. Alvarez (1884-1978), US physician. Alvarez practiced internal medicine in San Francisco and the Mayo Clinic, Minnesota, USA. He also undertook clinical research, mainly focusing on the digestive tract. He was the first to investigate the electrical activity of the stomach. He authored several books on medicine and after retiring wrote a widely syndicated medical column that explained medical concepts and advancements to the public. He is the father of the Nobel Prize winning physicist Luis Walter Alvarez (1911-1988).
