Palais des Papes.

The Palais des Papes, in Avignon, France, is the biggest gothic-style of the Middle Ages. . Avignon became the residence of the Popes in 1309 and was built between 1335 and 1352 on a rocky protuberance in the north of the town. Overhanging the Rhône, under the pontificates of Pope Benedict II and Clement VI. The choice of location for the construction of the Palace was chosen in order to make it seem more impressive to those who glanced at it from far away due to its height. It is visible from the sommet of the Alpilles (Bouches-du-Rhône). 19th Century engraving.
