William Calder Marshall, sculptor, 1878. Calder was a prolific sculptor, producing poetic and ideal works in the Classical style, as well as memorial statues. He won the first prize of £700 in competition in 1857 for his design of a monument to the Duke of Wellington, although another design was eventually adopted. He became a Royal Academician in 1852. From Men of Mark: a gallery of contemporary portraits of men distinguished in the Senate, the Church, in science, literature and art, the army, navy, law, medicine, etc. Photographed from life by Lock and Whitfield, with brief biographical notices by Thompson Cooper.
