Galena with calcite

Galena is lead sulfide and the world's chief ore of lead. It is metallic, brittle and typically forms cube-shaped crystals in hundreds of localities. Galena has perfect cubic cleavage, and when broken nearly all the small bits can be seen to display a cube shape. The area underground in the vicinity of St. Joe, Missouri is host to a number of lead and zinc mines, in which galena, sphalerite, calcite and fluorite are abundant and well crystallized.
