James Marion Sims, American gynaecologist

Illustration of James Marion Sims (1813-1883), American gynaecologist and surgical pioneer. Sims is considered the father of gynaecology by many due to his development of a surgical procedure to treat vaginal fistulas (holes in the vaginal wall that cause incontinence). However he is a controversial figure as he refined his surgical technique on slave women, subjecting some to as many as 30 operations without any anaesthetic. In 1855 Sims founded the first hospital for women in the US in New York.
