HIV Structure, Illustration

An illustration depicting the structure of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). The virus contains two copies of single-stranded RNA enclosed by a conical capsid. A matrix  surrounds the capsid, and in turn, is surrounded by a lipid bilayer envelope. Embedded in the viral envelope are HIV glycoproteins known as gp120 and gp40, which allows the virus to attach and fuse with host cells.
