Edward Teach AKA Blackbeard, English Pirate

Edward Teach AKA Blackbeard (1680 - 1718) was an English pirate who operated around the West Indies and the eastern coast of the American colonies. He was a sailor on privateer ships during Queen Anne's War. His nickname came from his thick black beard and fearsome appearance. He purportedly tied lit fuses under his hat to frighten his enemies.
