Santa Maria Volcano

Eruption of the Santiaguito Dome Volcano (Santa Maria), located near the city of Quetzaltenango in the Sierra Madre Mountain range of Guatemala. High concentrations of silica glass and gases in the thick dacitic lava produced by the volcano plug the vent until enough pressure builds up and causes a violent explosive eruption. In 1902 this volcano had the second largest volcanic eruption in the twentieth century killing hundreds of people. Photograph taken from the south on February 2, 1999.
