Claude Bernard (1813-1878), the French physiologist. most famous for defining the medical term 'milieu interieur', or homeostasis. He wrote, "La fixite du milieu interieur est la condition d'une vie libre et independante" (The constancy of the internal environment is the condition for a free and independent life). He is also known for his efforts to establish the use of the scientific method, in medicine, suggesting the use of blind experiments to ensure objectivity in scientific observations.
