"The Brave Boy of the Waxhaws," Currier and Ives, 1876. Andrew Jackson (1767-1845), the 7th American President. In 1781, Andrew and Robert were captured by the British in 1781. When Andrew refused to clean the boots of a British officer, the officer slashed him with a sword, leaving him with scars on his left hand and head, as well as an intense hatred for the British. The two brothers were held as prisoners, contracted smallpox, and nearly starved to death in captivity.
