Bone Surface: Osteoblasts and Osteoclasts

This microscopic view demonstrates bone cells located on the surface of the cortical bone of a vertebra. Osteoblasts are bone producing cells that can be recognized by their somewhat flattened appearance with multiple projections. Osteoclasts resorb bone and appear cylindrical in shape. They are often seen in small cavities known as Howship's Lacuna.
