A steam engine designed by Denis Papin.

Illustration depicting a steam engine designed by Denis Papin. It had no piston, but used the steam pressure to raise water into a cistern. Water from the cistern then fell back, driving a water wheel as it did so. Denis Papin (1647-1713) a French physicist, mathematician and inventor, best known for his pioneering invention of the steam digester, the forerunner of the pressure cooker and of the steam engine. Dated 18th century.
