Prefrontal cortex circuits

This illustration shows three circuits of the prefrontal cortex of the brain, the anterior cingulate circuit, the dorsolateral prefrontal circuit, and the Lateral orbitofrontal circuit. Also show are the pathways to the thalamus through the striatum and globus pallidus. the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex and anterior cingulate cortex are critical for mood regulation. The orbitofrontal circuit is involved in the reward system via the dopaminergic system to drive and shape behaviour. All three circuits are involved in depression, mania and obsessive compulsive disorders when involved with injury or lesion to the frontal lobe of the brain.
