Vasco da Gama Visits the King. The Zamorin of Calicut receiving Vasco da Gama. In 1498 Vasco da Gama landed in Calicut. His arrival has often been considered as the beginning of a new phase during which the control of the Indian Ocean passed into the hands of the Europeans. The Zamorin initially welcomed the Portuguese and allowed them to take various goods with them. From Notabel Voyagers: from Columbus to Nansen by William H. G.
