Islamic manuscript depicting the battle between the ancient Persian king Ardashir I and Ardowan, a Muslim warrior. The illustration, rendered in ink and gold on paper, is part of a the much larger Shahnameh, a poetic opus written by the Persian poet Ferdowsi around 1000 AD. The work tells the mythical and historical past of (Greater) Iran from the creation of the world until the Islamic conquest of Persia in the 7th century. This illustration dates from about 1335. It can be found in the Detroit Museum of Arts.
