Editorial Use Only . The Berlin Wall at Bernauer Street, West Berlin, Germany, 1970s. The German Democratic Republic (GDR, East Germany) began construction on the Berlin Wall on 13 August 1961. It completely cut off West Berlin from surrounding East Germany and from East Berlin. It was destroyed in 1989 and 1990; German reunification formally concluded on 3 October 1990.
