Glacial pothole in granite with many mineral streaks; Shelburne, Massachusetts. Potholes most commonly occur in areas where there are ancient rocks with different resistances to erosion. Stronger pebbles fall into small cavities in stream bottoms and swirl, widening and deepening the cavities.
