Mary Seacole, British-Jamaican Nurse

Sketch of Mary Seacole by Crimean war artist William Simpson (1823-1899), c. 1855. Mary Seacole (1805-1881) was a British-Jamaican businesswoman and nurse. During the Crimean War, she ran a hotel and tended to the wounded. Her autobiography, Wonderful Adventures of Mrs. Seacole in Many Lands (1857), is one of the earliest autobiographies of a mixed-race woman. In 2004 she was voted the greatest black Briton. Colorized.
