Title: Edward Kelley, English Alchemist and Charlatan
Caption: Edward Kelley (1555-1597) was an ambiguous figure in English Renaissance occultism and self-declared spirit medium who worked with John Dee in his magical investigations. Besides the professed ability to summon spirits or angels on a crystal ball and claimed to possess the secret of transmuting base metals into gold. Kelley claimed angels communicated in a special "angelic" language called Enochian that was dictated to him by angels he claimed to see within a crystal ball. Legends began to surround Kelley shortly after his death and made him the source for the folkloric image of the alchemist-charlatan.
