Abdul Hamid II (1842 - 1918), Sultan of the Ottoman Empire; last Sultan to exert effective control over the state. He oversaw a period of decline, with rebellions, particularly in the Balkans, and an unsuccessful war with the Russian Empire. He ruled from 1876 until he was deposed shortly after the 1908 Young Turk Revolution, in 1909.
