Caption: Sir David Brewster, Scottish physicist, 1800s. Brewster is chiefly remembered for his lifelong investigations into optics. He invented the kaleidoscope and improved the stereoscope by introducing refracting lenses. He was also a leading figure in the popularisation of science in Britain during the 19th century, and played a central role in the founding of the British Association for the Advancement of Science.
