The deposit of calcium in the form of calcium concretions is not limited to the pineal gland but is often accompanied by calcifications in the commissural region neighboring the root of the gland. Curiously, the commissural calcification is usually limited exclusively to the habenular commissure, while the neighboring posterior commissure is usually undamaged. Between the two commissures, the pineal recess lined by ependymal cells is clearly visible. Light micrograph.
