Illustration of a clitoridectomy and partial excision of the labia minora (two thirds excised). One of various methods of ritual removal of some or all of the female genitalia. These procedures are performed by a traditional circumciser using a blade or razor, with or without anaesthesia. Female genital mutilation has been outlawed or restricted in most of the countries in which it occurs. It is rarely done as a therapeutic medical procedure, such as when cancer has developed in or spread to the clitoris.
