A tax collector tarred and feathered during the Whiskey Rebellion or Whiskey Insurrection of 1791 - 1794 when citizens rose up to protest a tax on alcoholic drinks which had been raised to offset the costs of the Revolutionary War. During three years of unrest, which was eventually quelled with Federal troops, several people were killed and many arrested.
