Queen Jane interposing between Northumberland and Simon Renard, 1553 (1840). Lady Jane Grey intervening in an argument between the Duke of Northumberland and the Ambassador of Charles V, the Holy Roman Emperor. A grandniece of Henry VIII, Lady Jane Grey was proclaimed queen on Edward VI's death in 1553 in an attempt to secure a Protestant succession. Only a few days later Henry's eldest daughter, the Catholic Mary Tudor, claimed the throne. Jane was deposed and imprisoned in the Tower of London. She was executed for high treason, at the age of 16, on Tower Hill on 12th February 1554. The Duke of Northumberland, the architect and principal supporter of Jane's claim to the throne, was also executed.
