Title: South Winfield manor house,1844. Creator: Unknown.
Caption: South Winfield manor house, 1844. View of Wingfield Manor near South Wingfield in Derbyshire. The house, which dates back to 1441, fell into ruin in the 18th century. 'This once princely pile...was built in the reign of Henry VI...The mansion is beautifully situated on a commanding eminence, rising from deep valleys, again surrounded on every side with richly-wooded hills; its tall grey towers and battlemented turrets, mantled with ivy, rising proudly above the noble oaks and walnuts in which it is embosomed. The mansion is quite dismantled, and much of it destroyed..'. From "Illustrated London News", 1844, Vol V.
