Batist handkerchief with embroidery and bobbin lace with the initials CB, Handkerchief with a batist center piece on which embroidery and an edge of bobbin lace: Mechelen lace. The lace has a repeating pattern on a lattice ground, with a continuous branch along the top (inside) on which alternately a pomegranate and a triple flower branch hangs. The motifs are made in linen, the contours around the motifs are made with a thicker thread. The motifs, the pomegranate and semi-oval cartouches along the bottom edge, are filled with a simple diamond-shaped decorative soil. A flat scalloped edge runs along the underside (the outer edge). The lace is smooth on the handkerchief, with the exception of the corners that are wrinkled. The embroidery pattern has four double straight piping with meander corners and middle sections. Leaf garlands run between the inner two lines, a spiral runs between the outer two, crowned by a volute ornament on the corners. A closed palm fringe runs against the outer border. The initials CB are in one of the corners., anonymous, Belgium (possibly), c. 1860 - c. 1870, embroidering, l 57 cm × w 55 cm ×, 11 cm.
