To reduce Yorktown, Virginia, during the American Civil War, General George McClennan undertook a formal siege.  Shown here is a mortar battery, firing heavy projectiles in a high, arching projectory.  These are 10-13 inch mortars, each weighing 20,000 pounds, at Battery #4 near Yorktown.
