Smiths, Medieval Tradesmen, 15th Century

The smiths in this 15th century manuscript are hammering metal into shape over a solid iron anvil, their tools hanging behind them. Smiths workshops were housed in a separate building to reduce the risk of the rest of the castle catching fire. With an anvil and a hammer a blacksmith can make everything he needs. Then he makes everything everyone else needs: the farmers, builders, carpenters, craftsmen, householders, cooks. From swords and armor to keys, nails and tools, if it was made of metal, blacksmiths made it.
