Achilles painter, lekythos (love persecution), clay, quickly turned, painted (ceramic), alternately fired, clay, total: height: 37.9 cm; muzzle diameter: 6.9 cm; base diameter: 7.7 cm, inscription: under base of vessel: III, Ceramics, History of Jupiter (Zeus), High Classical (Greek antiquity), lekyths served as vessels for anointing oil and perfume; while the term was used more broadly in antiquity, archaeology today refers mainly to vessels of this form as lekyths. The picture of the Attic-red lekythos, created around 450 BC, shows the father of the gods Zeus pursuing love. The naked Zeus, running fast, only pressing off with the ball of his right foot, follows a young woman's quick step. He has only thrown a coat over his shoulders, which has already slipped down his left arm. He holds his scepter in his left hand; it seems to already touch the fleeing woman. The woman, dressed in a long chiton and a sloping coat, looks back at her pursuer. She has put her right arm back, almost in an encouraging gesture, may God follow her. The left arm is bent, forefinger and thumb are joined, similar to a gesture of young women holding flowers. She wears a tiara in her hair, so that a nymph can probably be recognized in her. At the bottom there is a circumferential simple key meander, at the top the figures are completed by a cross plate meander. The shoulder is decorated with a palmette ornament and an egg stick. The Achilles painter is one of the most important vase painters of his time, who, in addition to his red-figured ½uvre, is particularly distinguished by his white-ground lekyths.
