This was during a Terminal Countdown Demonstration Test, ie a launch rehearsal. Here they are practicing emergency escape procedures. Foale was preparing for a stay as the guest researcher aboard Mir. Foale joined the Mir group during mission STS-84, and staying until he was picked up by mission ST-86, (September-October 1997).
