The Abyssinian Expedition: review of the British Army on the Queen's birthday, at Senafe, 1868. Creator: Unknown.

The Abyssinian Expedition: review of the British Army on the Queen's birthday, at Senafe [in Eritrea], 1868. 'After Sir Robert (Napier) had passed along the line, he took up a position with his staff and all the foreign officers, and the troops all passed before him. The following was the order of them: The 3rd Dragoon Guards, under Col. Tower; the 12th Punjaub cavalry; the Naval Rocket Brigade, under Captain Fellowes; the Mule Mountain Train, under Col. Penn; the Royal Engineers, under Major Pritchard; the 4th (King's Own), 33rd and 45th regiments, and the Beloochee battalion... The appearance of the troops, after such an arduous campaign, was most satisfactory. The cavalry particularly were praised for their appearance, and they rode past a number of times, at various rates of speed...The dark dress, as well as the dark faces of the Punjaubees made a fine contrast with the red coats and fair complexions of the Dragoon Guards, and in their riding and exercise they were not behind their white brethren in arms...Great crowds of Abyssinians and camp followers were on the rising ground between the plain and the camp. The background is the very striking masses of bare rock, which is the peculiar feature of Senafe'. From "Illustrated London News", 1868.
