The Amistad Slave Ship Revolt, 1839

La Amistad was a schooner that became infamous for a slave revolt by Mende captives. The men attacked the crew and gained control of the ship. The owners of the ship and Spanish government claimed the slaves as property. Known as United States vs. The Amistad (1841), the case was decided by the Supreme Court in favour of the Mende.
