Nitrogen dioxide equilibrium. Nitrogen dioxide (NO2) gas exists in equilibrium with dinitrogen tetroxide (N2O4) gas, 2NO2 <-> N2O4. NO2 is a brown gas, while N2O4 is colourless. This series demonstrates the effect of pressure on the NO2 <-> N2O4 equilibrium. A gas syringe is filled with a mixture of the two gases (frame 1). When the plunger is rapidly pushed in to decrease the gas volume by half, the colour darkens due to increased concentration of NO2 (frame 2). However, within seconds the colour lightens slightly as the equilibrium shifts and some NO2 is converted to N2O4 (frame 3), in accordance with Le Chatelier's principle. When the plunger is released, the changes are reversed: the mixture first lightens noticeably (frame 4), and then darkens slightly (frame 5).
