SIERRA LEONE BECOMES INDEPENDENT. Sierra Leone became independent on 27 April 1961. The celebrations started on Friday 21 April, with the Queen's birthday parade and lasts until 1 May 1961. HRH the Duke of Kent is representing the Queen at the celebrations.
