Gordon Wins Derby - Queen Sees Her Horse Come Second -- It was her week - but his day.... just before the start of the Coronation year derby her majesty the Queen chats with Sir Gordon Richards, the Jockey who rode 'Pinza' to victory.. on right is the Duke of Edinburgh. Gordon Richards achieved his life-long ambition by winning his first ever derby on 'pinza' at Epsom to-day... It is his 28-th attempt. Richards beat the Queen's horse 'Aureole' by four lengths... third was 'pink horse', ridden by Rae Johnstone. Thunderous cheers broke out over Epsom downs from the throats of over 500,000 people when her majesty with the Duke of Edinburgh drove down the famous course just prior to the race. June 06, 1953.
