Grand Duke Nicholas of Russia, Russian general, 1917. Grand Duke Nicholas (1856-1929) was appointed Commander-in-chief of the Russian army at the outbreak of World War I. After the Tsar personally assumed command in 1915, the Grand Duke was placed in command of Russian forces fighting the Turks in the Caucusus. In 1919 he escaped from the Crimea aboard a British warship shortly ahead of the arrival of the Red Army, and spent the remainder of his life in exile in France.
