Asa Gray (1810-1888)

Asa Gray (1810-1888) American botanist, in the herbarium of the Harvard University Botanic Garden. The Herbarium was based on Gray's collection of more than 200,000 specimens which he offered to the Botanic Garden in 1862 on the condition that his collection, and his library of 2,200 botanical books, were housed in a fireproof building. Engraving from "The Century Magazine" (New York, 1886). (Photo by: Universal History Archive/UIG via Getty Images).
