Cervical Cancer Progression, Illustration

Illustration showing the progression of cervical cancer. Upper left section shows a normal cervix. Upper right section shows the early stage IB of cervical cancer. This stage is defined by clinically visible lesions, less than 4 centimeters across the greatest dimension, limited to the cervix uteri. Lower left shows the late stage IB of cervical cancer, defined by a clinically visible lesion greater than 4 centimeters across its widest dimension. Lower right section shows IIB cervical cancer. This is an advanced stage of the cancer, with extension to the pelvic wall, as seen here. This stage can also result in hydronephrosis (non-functioning kidney). Symptoms of cervical cancer include bleeding between periods, pain after sexual intercourse and heavier periods. Cancer of the cervix is rare and if detected early is almost always cured.
